New York City’s Main Library, at Fifth Avenue between 40th and 42nd Streets, opened in 1911,
is a National Historic Landmark. The oft-photographed lions guarding the entrance are named
Patience (on the south side) and Fortitude. Anyone in the world can use the library’s vast
